ABOUT THE ARTIST
My art, like my life, is in a constant state of evolution. There is a moving away on my part, from the perfectionistic approach to making art to a gradual turning toward the spontaneous joy of it. Leaving behind the worry of every minute mark on the canvas opens me up to a certain amount of allowing. In this process, I surrender more and have a much fuller experience. This way of painting also gives the image being painted a much bigger voice; it gains the space to let me know how it wants to be. I am learning how to listen deeply, and trust completely this thing called Art.
I will continue to pursue a style that is bold and authentically mine. Understanding that I love detail I will always bring this aspect to the wall or canvas, but with light-heartedness. Each morning over coffee, before picking up the paintbrush, I ask myself: What is required of me today? How will my art-making unfold in this moment? Sometimes classical, other times more abstract, the "image" screams out and I am learning to listen—deeply.
What is my process when painting a mural?
What I love about a mural is the impact the art has on the viewer. There is no doubt when walking into somebody’s home, or wandering through the halls of a public space, what is trying to be said. Beauty, love of a particular place or being, the sensuality of a divinely inspired spirit: these essences are the result of a well-planned, well-executed mural...What I love about painting a mural is the satisfaction of knowing I have pleased the client, who sometimes is myself! Drawing the planned image onto the wall, then adding layers of color that we or I have mapped out: this process invigorates and excites me. Passion is the only word that comes to mind when I think about painting a mural. I simply love painting murals! - B. Joseph
